Vitamins & Minerals For Your Dog

vitamin and minerals for your dog

Vitamins can improve the quality of your pet’s life. They help regulate body processes, protect the body from environmental toxins, and break down nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats so the body can utilize them.

Here are noteworthy points about vitamins for dogs:

1) Vitamins work with minerals and enzymes for digestion, reproduction, muscle and bone growth, and maintenance of healthy skin and hair coat.

2) All multi-vitamins for pets are not created equal.

3) Vitamins are necessary for literally tens of thousands of different chemical reactions in the body.

4) They often work in conjunction with minerals and enzymes to ensure normal digestion, reproduction, muscle and bone growth and function, healthy skin and hair, clotting of blood, and the use of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates by the body.

5) Their unique set of nutritional requirements has been passed on from generation to generation just like the breed’s unique coat, body size and temperament.

We have found that we cannot change the genetic makeup of the animals we are feeding just by exposing them to a different diet for a small amount of time. Therefore, I suggest that Burmese mountain dog owners try to feed their present companion pets with foods that contain what this breed requires. The food should dogs vitamins contain: nutrient sources that are similar to those found in the native environment of the breed’s ancestors (sources which are not foreign to the digestive and glandular systems of today’s Burmese Mountain Dog and which are easy for them to assimilate) and the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals that match the breed specific nutritional requirements – those which have been passed on by their ancestors.

There are over 170 different molecular forms of the mineral "calcium." The source of the mineral calcium that a Burmese Mountain Dog can easily assimilate can be hard for a different breed to assimilate and thus that other breed can develop kidney stones on the best source of calcium for a Burmese Mountain Dog. The reverse of this is also true. Below you will find a list of the best sources of vitamins and minerals for the dietary requirements of a Burmese Mountain Dog.

The balance or amounts are not listed because each individual animal can have different requirements depending on: the sex of the animal; the age (a puppy will have different needs than an adolescent, who even though it may be the same size as an adult will have different requirements than an adult); the activity level (if a dog is very active the dog will need more of the B complex than a couch potato of the same breed); stress levels; medical conditions; and other dietary factors (i.e. does the water supply contain high amounts of minerals). There are many factors come into play when considering the proper amount of each nutrient in an individual dogs diet.

To learn more about your dog and the best dietary needs for it, you can visit your local pet store for books on health topics and see what type of clinics are available for your enrichment. Also check with your local Human Society chapter similarly. They often host workshops all around your area and can mail or email you a calendar of upcoming events.

Pet Health Products

The health of our dogs, cats or other animals or pets we may have is vitally important. There is no excuse nowadays not to give your pet the best chance at a long vibrant life possible. Think about it, our little furry friends have no way of letting us know if they are sick, injured or just not feeling that well. So the first tip to helping your precious pet  get vital health  is to monitor their behaviors and actions. Really keen in on what they’re doing. If we have a problem we can drive to the doctor or let somebody know. Imagine if you had a horrible migrane headache but could not tell anybody you had that problem!

Generally you want to feed your dogs a proper healthy and nutritious diet and not scraps of junk food leftovers from the kitchen table. Also you want to make sure they get enough time to play and have fun as well as taking them for daily walks and runs to make sure they get good cardiovascular excercise. Outside of that there are numerous pet health products you can buy to maintain a healthy body for them. For example you might want to pick up some dog eye drops or tear stain removers to make sure they have good vision and don’t get cataracts. You always want to maintain good dog eye health if you can.You also want to make sure you clean their teeth daily if possible. Their gums should never bleed.

You don’t want your dog going deaf do you? Make sure to buy some good animal health products that help keep their ears clean and clear of any wax buildup. Then there’s the flea and tick issue. Many dogs can have this problem and it must be nightmare for them and there is nothing they can do about it. They must rely on you to help them. Imagine if you had a head full of fleas biting you all day. Then you can be proactive and purchase some dog suppliments and vitamins to make sure they get all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need  to support a long and healthy life.

Parasites and worms can literally kill a dog over time if they infect the heart or other vital organs. We have deworming products as well that can burn these worms and parasites out of their systems, allowing them to absorb more nutrients from their food, which will make them healthier over time. Remember too if your dog gets injured in a car accident or fight with another dog, you need to get right on top of that and keep great dog wound care.

So we urge you, think about what it would be like to have some of these health problems and not be able to say or do anything about it. You would have to suffer in silence. Remember this is how your pet has to deal with it. Take a moment and try to determine if your pet has any health problems to begin with and if they do take the necessary steps to getting rid of them and allowing them to be as healthy as possible. Start by taking them to the vet and go from there.

Organic Dog Food

organic dog food

Organic Dog Food

Since the advent of grocery store commercial dog food, there has been an explosion of pets dying from tumors, growths, cancers, and diseases that were unheard many years ago.

I truly believe this has been caused by the unhealthy chemicals, pesticides, hormones, fats and preservatives used to make this cereal based kibble palatable and long lived. Can you imagine eating a dry, cereal like, tasteless food every day, that in fact can sit on the shelf for years and not spoil. Obiously there are heavy duty chemicals and preservatives used to extend the shelf life. It’s like eating sawdust with a chemical enhanced flavor, to cover up all the harmful additives.

Changing to organic dog food, whether it is home made organic, with the same all natural ingredients you eat for supper, or buying the premium high grade organic dog food that has become increasingly popular, is the best you can do for your four legged companion. An organic dog food marked 95% organic meets the same guidelines as organic food produced for humans. The food won’t contain pesticides or antibiotics, and it’s preserved with  natural substances like Vitamins C and E . Organically certified pet food is more costly, just as our own organic food is more expensive, but the advantages of superior pet health and helping our environment is worth it to most of us.

Organic dog food, or any organic food for that matter, must be labelled and certified organic, ususally by the USDA, although some states have their own regulatory systems.

Foods with a lot of fillers are cheaper but less nutritious. Just as with human organic food, natural organic ingredients will go a long way toward giving your pet a long, healthy life.

Some of the benefits of switching to organic dog food are: Higher energy, more activity, stronger bones and teeth, and a beautiful healthy coat. – Helps prevent itching and irritating skin conditions, because organic dog food is free of artificial colors and flavor enhancers, chemical additives and toxic pesticides that could cause many of these skin allergies. In some cases completely eliminating these allergic skin reactions. – It is easier to maintain a healthier weight, because organic dog food is superior in nutritional value, and this prevents overeating in you dog as they are more satisfied eating smaller amounts. There are no bulk fillers in organic dog food. – Better overall health and a stronger immunity. Even if you dog seems healthy he/she can still benefit. An increased immune system will help prevent long term, costly illnesses and infections, that may require costly medical treatments. – Quality of life and longevity are increased by feeding organic dog food as opposed to the cereal filled cheap dog food.

Organic dog will be formulated with human grade meat, not ground bits and pieces of animals that are unfit for human consumption, or rancid road kill, as the cheaper store bought commercial food industry uses. Also you should find an organic dog food that boasts using no corn, wheat, soy, grain fractions, fillers or by-products.

Learn to decipher labels on commercial pet foods. They are purposefully deceiving us into buying low grade, unhealthy food all for profit, not for the health of our pet.

To buy organic dog food or to make home made organic dog food will guarantee what you pet is ingesting and give him/her a better chance at a healthy, longer, happier, more energetic life.

Tips on Keeping your Dog Healthy

Keep your Dog Healthy with Dog Food Supplements…

Just like humans, there are many reasons to enhance a dog’s diet with the use of dog food supplements, but as your dog’s caretaker you must be sure to do the proper research so as not to compromise your dog’s health.Food supplements can be used in order to obtain the proper nutrients including vitamins and minerals in a dog’s diet and ensure a healthy pet.Factors such as your dog’s age, breed, level of activity and a host of other things will determine what types of dog health food supplements can be used and how frequently they can be given.

What is a Dog Food Supplement?

A food supplement for your dog is simply something given in addition to the regular diet. Generally speaking, this extra something is given to improve the health of your dog by providing some missing ingredient or nutrient not found in your pet’s every day dog food. For proper dog health, food supplements can improve the health of your dog, increase her lifespan, help her overcome a particular disease or ailment, provide her additional energy or a host of other similar reasons.

A large breed dog, for instance, has special health needs as the bones and joints undergo more stress than smaller dogs, thereby calling for some dog food supplements.Additional amounts of glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulfate provide benefits that promote healthy, strong joints.Additionally, a nutrient such as L-carnitine may help a dog stay lean which will in turn generate less stress on the bones and joints.

Does Your Pet Need Dog Food Supplements?

The need for a food supplement in your pet will vary greatly based on a host of factors. In this case, dogs are not all made the same and require different vitamins and nutrients. In fact, the same dog will need different supplements at different phases in her life.A senior dog, for example, who is experiencing the painful symptoms of arthritis will benefit from additional amounts of glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulphate.

Additionally, as dogs age they tend to develop problems digesting foods properly and a digestive enzyme supplement may prove beneficial. There are other dog health food supplements available for other types of dogs whether they be puppies, overweight, excessively shedding or fighting a specific disease.Certain breeds of dogs are also prone to problems or deficiencies not found in other breeds and may require the benefits of a dog food supplement.

Additional types of problems treated with dog food supplements include:

-allergies

-arthritis

-digestive problems

-skin or coat ailments

-weight concerns

-calcium deficiencies

-periodontal care

How Much Nutrients Does Your Dog Need?

How Much Nutrients Does Your Dog Need?

What type of nutrients does your dog food really need?

Maintaining the health of your dog is an essential part of having a pet and proper maximum dog food nutrition is one of the most important things you can do. A healthier pet is a happier pet, a dog that will wait for you at the door when you come from work. To make this happen there are a few things you have to take into account while caring for your dog and one of the most important is your dogs eating habits. Correct maximum dog food nutrition is the proper way to help your dog stay healthy as long as possible. To find out the correct dog food nutrition you need to consult a vet who can give you advice about the ratio of vitamins and proteins your dog needs.

Know the amount of dog food nutrition your pet should have everyday

When going to the vet, you can find out your dogs health state and can ask many questions, even if you already know the answer, reassurance is always good, and the visit to the vet is also good for your pet. Ask your vet about the food your dog should be eating, don’t just give your dog any food that states "dog food nutrition". Feeding a dog is like feeding a kid and giving it the appropriate amount of nutritious food is essential for their health. The correct dog food nutrition is given according to their weight, height, breed, age, and metabolism.

One of the most important things to consider when buying food for your dog is the dogs age. A puppy will eat certain things and definitely much more vitamins and proteins  than an adult dog. Each phase of their growing has its correspondent feeding phase. Jumping over a phase might do your pet a lot of harm even in the end. When it comes to feeding our pets, we have to pay the same attention we pay to our diet. Nutritional dog food is adapted to each dog’s needs taking in account their age and medical condition first. If you keep in mind that your dog is unique, then you also know his needs are unique and his nutritional dog food should be customized.

Tips for buying nutritional dog food for your canine companion

To have your dog at his peak health, you should keep in mind certain things when going shopping for dog food. You have to know what the food contains before you buy it. Make sure the nutrition dog food has the right amount of minerals, proteins, vitamins, fats, and carbohydrates that will help your dog stay healthy. So check the canned dog food and the bags with dog food for some of the following:

The type of meat – chicken, pork or beef – and the amount of proteins it brings to your dog’s food.

The amount of fat contained in the food.

The existence of minerals that will take care of your dog’s skeleton.

The fatty acids that take care of your dog’s skin and fur.

The quantity of carbohydrates necessary for your dog’s energy.

The ingredients that will help its metabolism.

The supplementary vitamins and minerals needed in your dog’s feeding.

It was stated in our first article what it takes to produce a top quality pet vitamin. It should be made with a precise combination of vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, bioflavonoids, fatty acids and amino acids. These ingredients have been shown to combat the ravages of free radicals and provide immune system support.

What exactly are these ingredients, where do they come from and what do they do?

Alfalfa- Alfalfa is known as the "King of Plants", and its roots have been used for centuries in many cultures. The herb belongs to the legume family, closely related to beans and peas. It is an excellent source of vitamins D, E and K, beta-carotene, minerals, fiber, chlorophyll, calcium, proteins and fats. It is especially rich in the amino acid trypophane. Alfalfa is considered to be a very beneficial herb and is used to increase appetite, alleviate certain allergic reactions and help poor digestion. It may also reduce inflammation due to arthritis and rheumatism. (Canine formula only)

Alpha Amylase- A soluble fiber that aids in digestion, Alpha Amylase allows the ingredients of the vitamin to be absorbed into the body as rapidly and quickly as possible without diminishing the antioxidant capabilities.

Amino Acids- Necessary for the synthesis of body proteins and many other tissue constituents. Amino Acids aid in building new muscle, bone and tendon cells, play a vital role in metabolism, stamina and brain function. The also enable vitamins and minerals to be properly absorbed. There are approximately twenty-eight amino acids that combine in various ways to create hundreds of different types of proteins. Some enhance the immune system by stimulating the antioxidant activity of certain enzymes and can prevent skin and coat problems. Others prevent premature aging, tumors, nerve disease and connective tissue disorders. A deficiency could cause a host of problems ranging from indigestion, stunted growth or nervous disorders.

Beta-Carotene- The precursor to Vitamin A becomes a powerful free radical scavenger in the body. Vitamin A is essential in skeletal growth, reproductive function, embryonic development and differentiation of tissues. It is crucial for proper eye function and possible cataract reduction. Vitamin A is necessary for healthy skin and mucous membranes which are the first line of defense against invading microorganisms and toxins. Beta-Carotene and Vitamin A destroy carcinogens and guard against heart disease and stroke and lowers cholesterol.

Blue Green Algae- Natures most basic food. Existing at the beginning of the food chain, it provides nutrition in its simplest form. Blue Green Algae is very rich in chlorophyll and is essential for the smooth operation of the brain and nervous system. It enhances the health of the entire body, strengthens the immune system, promotes intestinal regularity and the healing of wounds. It also boosts hemoglobin production and helps purify the blood. The trace minerals found in Blue Green algae are Boron, Calcium, Chlorine, Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Fluorine, Geranium, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Phosphorus, Potassium, Silicon, Sodium, Tin, Titanium, Vanadium and Zinc.

Brewers Yeast- A natural source of B-Complex vitamins. Studies show another beneficial effect of Brewers Yeast supplementation is significant reduction of body fleas on companion pets.

Cats Claw- Also known as Una de Gato, is an ancient herb found in the rain forest of Peru. This singular and wild woody vine is known for its amazing healing properties and had been used by native people for centuries. It cleans the intestinal tract, enhances the action of white blood cells and acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Research in different countries, including Germany, Austria, England and Hungary has shown that Cats Claw can stimulate the immune system and may help in the treatment of diseases including cancer, viral or respiratory infections, allergies, arthritis and rheumatism.

Chicken Liver- 100% chicken liver has omega fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and the B-complex vitamin group. It contains minerals including calcium, copper, phosphorus and iron. Chicken liver is good for anemia and aids in building healthy red blood cells and can increase energy and relieve stress.

Copper- Aids in the formation of red blood cells and works with Vitamin C to form elastin, an important protein that makes up bone, skin and connective tissue. It aids in the healing process and energy production. Copper is needed for healthy joints and nerves.

Evening Primrose Oil- High in gamma linolenic acid, an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid that promotes cardiovascular health. It is known to prevent hardening of the arteries, heart disease and high blood pressure and aids in lowering cholesterol. It is good for certain skin disorders and can increase the release of sex hormones improving reproductive health.

L Methionine- An essential amino acid not synthesized by the body that must be obtained from food or supplements. It is a powerful antioxidant and good source of sulfur, which neutralizes free radicals and helps prevent skin, coat and nail problems. It can detoxify harmful agents such as lead and other heavy metals found in airborne pollutants. L Methionine supplementation is needed for the absorption, transportation, and availability of selenium and zinc in the body. It can reduce fatigue and is useful in the development of age-related cataracts. (Canine formula only).

Magnesium- Acts as a catalyst in the utilization of carbohydrates, fats, protein, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. It is important for energy and healthy maintenance of bones, teeth, arteries, heart and nerves. Research has shown magnesium can help prevent cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and certain forms of cancer.

Manganese- An enzyme activator that plays an important part in tissue respiration and carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It is important for normal skeletal development and to maintain sex hormone production. Manganese deficiency can lead to paralysis, convulsions, dizziness, deafness and blindness.

Oyster Shell- Extremely rich in calcium, the major element in the structural framework of bones. Practically every cell in the body especially heart, nerves and muscles, rely on calcium to function properly. The heart requires calcium to maintain a normal beat. Muscles need it for contraction and relaxation.

Papain- Aids in the digestion of protein and helps cleanse the tissues and intestinal walls. The unique ability of Papain to break down protein and convert a portion of it into Arginine is extremely important because Arginine is influences the production of HGH. HGH is produced in the pituitary gland is directly responsible for DNA and RNA replication. HGH helps increase muscle tone and decrease body fat.

Phosphorus- Works with calcium to build bones and teeth and aids the body in the utilization of vitamins, and conversion of food to energy. A deficiency can lead to loss of weight and appetite, irregular breathing, fatigue and nervous disorders.

Pine Bark- The proanthocyanidids in Pine Bark have been shown in clinical studies to be 20 times more effective than Vitamin C and 50 times more effective than Vitamin E as an antioxidant. Pine Bark helps relieve pain and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatism. Pine Bark has a remarkable ability to seek and destroy free radicals which is a tremendous benefit to the health of our animals. By reducing oxidative damage to cells and vital tissues, much damage is held to a subdued rate. Unlike dietary antioxidants, proanthocyanidids readily cross the blood-brain barrier to protect vital brain and nerve tissue from oxidation.

Potassium (Citrate)- Important for a healthy nervous system and regular heart rhythm. It helps prevents strokes, aids in proper muscle contraction and works with sodium to control the water balance in the body. It is important for chemical reactions within cells, aids in maintaining stable blood pressure and proper transmission of chemical impulses. Potassium regulates the transfer of nutrients through cell membranes. Signs of deficiency include abnormally dry skin, weakness, paralysis, low blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.

Selenium- An essential trace mineral whose main function is to inhibit the oxidation of fats. It is a vital antioxidant, especially when combined with Vitamin E. It protects the immune system by preventing the formation of free radicals. It has also been found to function as a preventative against the formation of certain types of tumors.

Shark Cartilage- Contains collagen and glycosaminoglycans. This combination makes shark cartilage a powerful anti-inflammatory wound healing agent that is not toxic and has no known side effects. It is also an effective substance against bacteria, virus and fungal infections. There have been several studies demonstrating the ability of shark cartilage to shrink some cancerous tumors, including those unaffected by standard treatments. Shark cartilage contains a protein that impedes the formation of blood vessels to tumors.

Taurine- Is one of the most abundant amino acids in the body. Taurine therapy is used in the treatment of ischemic heart disease. Low Taurine and magnesium levels have been found after heart attacks. Taurine also plays a role in maintaining the correct composition of bile and solubility of cholesterol. It helps stabilize cell membranes and helps the movement of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium in and out of cells, which generates nerve impulses. It is necessary for chemical reactions that produce normal vision. (Feline Only: Canines produce their own Taurine).

Vitamin B Complex- Necessary for carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Helps the functioning of the nervous system, maintains muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract, maintains the health of skin, coat, eyes, mouth and liver.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)- Essential for normal functioning of the heart, nerves, muscles, skin and digestive system. Necessary for carbohydrate metabolism.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)- Necessary for carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism and antibody and red blood cell formation. Good for healthy eyes, skin, and coat.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)- Promotes growth. proper functioning of the nervous system, maintenance of healthy skin, tongue, digestive system, and carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)- Assists in the release of energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Aids in the utilization of some vitamins, stimulates growth, and aids in the formation of antibodies.

Vitamin B12- Essential for normal formation of red blood cells, carbohydrate-fat-protein metabolism, and good appetite. B12 maintains fertility, promotes normal growth and development and prevents nerve damage by maintaining the fatty sheaths that protect nerve endings.

Vitamin C (Ester C) A powerful antioxidant that also protects other antioxidants such as Vitamin E. The cells of the brain and spinal cord, which frequently incur free radical damage, can be protected by significant amounts of Vitamin C. In addition to its role as an antioxidant, it also increases the synthesis of Interferon,, a natural anti-viral substance produced by the body and stimulates the activity of certain key immune cells. Vitamin C is a key factor in many immune functions and lowers the risk of cataracts while promoting cell growth and tissue repair.

Vitamin E- An essential fat soluble vitamin that includes eight naturally occurring compounds and each of these compounds exhibit different biological activities. The most widely accepted biological function of Vitamin E is related to its antioxidant activities. It is the most effective chain breaking lipid soluble antioxidant in the biological membrane. It contributes to membrane activity, protecting critical cellular structures against damage from oxygen free radicals.

Whey Protein- The importance of protein in any carnivores diet cannot be understated for it is critical in building and maintaining muscle mass and other necessary metabolic functions. Protein deficiencies can lead to retarded skeletal and muscle growth and a weakened immune system, which causes susceptibility to infections and degenerative diseases. (Feline formula)
Zinc- Zinc is a component of almost 100 enzymes involved in metabolic processes, most of which work with the red blood cells to move carbon dioxide from the tissue to the lungs. As an antioxidant it promotes normal growth and development, aids in wound healing, enhances cell division, repair and growth. It also helps synthesize DNA and RNA. Zinc deficiencies have been linked to prostate hypertrophy, cancer, slow recovery from head injuries, diabetes, arthritis and reduced immune system responses.

If your pet is suffering from hip or joint inflammation, it is suggested that the proper pet vitamin should include Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Methylsulfonymethane (MSM) and Vitamin C which will help to quickly and effectively reverse and heal the devastating effects of Osteoarthritis.

MSM supplies biologically active sulfur to animal joints. Use of MSM has been shown to reduce rigidity of cells in the soft tissues of the body. By reducing this rigidity, fluids are able to pass more freely from the cell and this helps to reduce cell pressure, thereby reducing inflammation and pain.

Glucosamine- Provides the joints with the building blocks needed to repair the damage caused by osteoarthritis. Acting as a catalyst, glucosamine helps animals synthesize new cartilage needed to replace damaged cartilage caused by wear and tear. Hip dysplasia occurs when normal wear and tear break down cartilage.

Chondroitin- Attracts and holds fluid within cartilage tissue helping to lubricate joints, increase mobility and reduce discomfort caused by hip dysplasia. Chondroitin neutralizes the destructive enzymes that are known to damage and destroy cartilage. It aids the entry of glucosamine into inflamed joints. Vitamin C promotes cartilage growth and tissue repair.

Vitamin C- Is a key factor in the immune system, helping white blood cells function. Prolonged Vitamin C deficiency will cause existing tissues to deteriorate.

Combine all this into an FDA approved lab and you have the highest quality pet vitamins imaginable
